Dalek Attack.

I’ve kind of given up on video games now as I can never really spare the time these days to play them. Also I have that curse that if I do, I’ll go for older games more often then not. It’s getting to the point were if I played a modern game, my brain would just be so overwhelmed I’d end up keeling over and having some kind of fit.

However that said, I am tempted to try and hunt down Dalek Attack. I don’t really know much about downloading emulators or old games online, but this game just looks too good. It’s got Ogrons and Robomen from Invasion Of Earth. If you can watch this video and not have one of those “holy shit!!!” moments at what happens at the 3:45 mark… well, you just ain’t welcome here no more. There… I said it.

I know that this has been said many times before, by many people, but why couldn’t you walk or fall into water in old video games? Why would it kill you? Could nobody swim in the 80’s or early 90’s? The opening few seconds in this game make no sense. Wet knees never hurt nobody.

For You…

Probably the closes you get to a romantic moment in this story. I wanted the black lining to be a bit foreboding in this shot. Like a love scene gone a bit wrong.

Movie Cliché #59.

Was watching Hannibal Rising the other night on TV, and it just had one of those movie cliché I really hate. Movie Cliché being like when someone’s trying to stop a bomb going off in a film, and they always stop it with one second remaining (usually after some argument over cutting either the red wire or the blue wire.) So in the film, you have terrible things happening to a young Hannibal Lecter during the second world war. And as a young man he flees across Europe to Paris to stay with his aunt (who is Asian). At this point in the film, you’ve seen Hannibal as a child screwed over by a group looters. As soon as I saw his Japanese aunty, I knew what was coming next. Ok, it was a very small scene, but when they cut to the montage of his aunt teaching him martial arts and sword fighting… I wince a little. In a Kung Fu movie or at least an action movie, I love that cliché moment. But in something written by Thomas Harris about a young Hannibal Lecter. A Yoda moment is so out of place. When has a serial killer\cannibal ever needed training, anyway? Did Ted Bundy have a black belt and nun chucks?

It’s not a terrible movie, apart from that one scene.

Bonus points if you can think of any other annoying cliché. Like a movie cop will always die one day from retirement and so on.

I Wuv You!!!

For some reason, I really looked forward to drawing this shot. I knew it was going to be one of the few shots that really sum up this comic. The weird thing is… considering this is a horror story, I don’t think I’ve ever drawn so many smiling faces before.

I’m feeling a little burnt out today. I’m not far off finishing the first issue, so I’ve been pushing it lately. Working till my eyes are burning and my hand feels like it’s going to drop off or cease up. So I’m taking the rest of the night off. I got one of those Modern Masters books through the post today (the Kevin Maguire one) which I’m going to read, then maybe a film.

Back To The Party.

A quick establishing shot for the top of the page, and a quick reminder to the reader that the cast has now got a lot bigger.

It’s kind of sod’s law that you can spend ages on a big shot, but some times, some of the smaller shots are just cooler. I like this little thin shot, and it only took a fraction of the time some other shots took to draw.

{UPDATE} The best thing on the net that doesn’t involve nudity. This game is the best. I’ve got about half of them so far. About 27. See if you can beat that score… or just lie and say you did.

A Couple Of Flicks.

Here some films I’ve watched recently on DVD to keep me warm on these cold winter nights.

Tokyo Gore Police: A bit like a Japanese Troma movie. I liked it, but you need a strong stomach for this film. It‘s got a lot of messed up scenes in it.

Franklyn: A hard movie to describe. From watching the trailer, you’d think it was a futuristic comic book movie, where as that’s only about a third of the film and most of it takes place in the real world. I liked it a lot, but the whole idea is so out there, I could see why it would turn a lot of people off this film.

Hardware: The film that famously ripped off a short 2000ad story. It was nice to see a good Sci-Fi movie I haven’t seen before that isn’t full of CGI effects. Great late 80’s soundtrack too. The DVD also has a really good Sci-Fi, short film on it called Sea Of Perdition.

The Spooky Door Shot.

I think out of all the panels I’ve drawn so far, this is the one that most looks like something out of a horror story. No blood, guts or monsters. Just a door that’s slightly ajar.

Actually I’m just coming up to drawing the final scene of the first issue. Which will hopefully be the first big fright of the story. So far it’s been all little creepy moments and introducing the characters.

I’ve got to get my lightbox out later and last time I used it, the back of the plug snapped off, so I’m not looking forward to using it this time. I feel like I’m one of those people in the early moments of an episode of Casualty.

The Waiting Is The Hardest Part.

Only about another month until it’s time for new Who, again. I think this is the most excited I’ve been over Who, since it came back in 2005. Kind of peaked at the third season for me and the last couple of years have been ok, with only The Waters Of Mars really standing out.

I’m going to be spending this coming month catching up on old episodes on DVD and online. Speaking of which, I come across a site called Seesaw last night. They have a similar set up to Blinkbox, with some classic Doctor Who episodes, free2view. In fact they have a couple of the same stories up. But they do also have some later Doctor stories as well. Between the two, I think you have episodes for every classic Doctor. The good thing is, they even have a couple I haven’t seen before. Right now, I’m half way through Planet Of The Spiders.

Check them out HERE.
