Robots Of Death.

Giant Robots taking out hordes of Zombies and a Dr Who pun in the title. This is indeed a very geeky Friday afternoon. Hopefully geeky good not geeky bad. Wait is there such thing as geeky good? I don’t know… I’ve got a splitting headache from inking all day and I need a lay down.

Spot The Difference.

{NOTE TO SELF} Next time you draw a picture of a giant Robot kicking a car up in the air and the front right wheel can clearly be seen flying off. Please don’t then in the next frame where the car is crashing down on the heads of a couple of Zombies have that wheel magically reappear.

I would like to dedicate this post to White Out\Correction Fluid and the many, many holes it has got me out of over the years.

Big, Bad, Battle Bot.

An action shot of my big battle driod.

I was saying in a previous post a few weeks ago about not being able to find much good reference on Mecha style robots but a couple of days after saying that I did then come across a Transformers graphic novel in my local bookshop. Old style designs and plenty of big robots shots jumping around. I felt a lot better after having a good flick through that. Had some nice Don Figueroa pin ups in the back as well. I think I found it like a day or two before I had to start drawing.

Now It’s A Party.

I liked my latest panel so much I decided to try it out as a banner for this blog. I think it works ok. More Zombie action in this shot.

The problem with Blogger is it tends to blow your artwork up much bigger then the actual size you drew it. I only mention this as looking at the above image I can’t help but now think that the silhouette on the far left looks a bit familiar. It wasn’t meant to look like anyone when I drew it. Just a rough human looking shape.

Yep. Into my third year of blogging and I’ve only just got round to sticking up a banner. That’s how I roll baby (slowly and impractically).

Hammer Time.

Been watching a lot of old British Hammer horror movies lately. Both on late night digital telly and a couple of cheap DVD’s I’ve picked up recently. It fun just to watch how many different ways you can kill and bring back Dracula in these movies. The Bat vomiting blood on his ashes at the start of Scars Of Dracula is so far my favourite.

I watched The Legend Of The 7 Golden Vampires over the weekend were Hammer horror meets Kung Fu. Weirdly modern movies and TV shows like Buffy and Blade make this movie feel slightly more contemporary then the other Horror movies. There is a lot of Kung Fu\Vampire movies and comics around nowadays so in many ways this film feels a bit modern even if it doesn’t always look it. It also pretty watchable which is a plus with these types of films.

Also watching all these Hammer films lately reminds me a lot of the much overlooked comedy Dr Terrible’s house of horror.

Panel Of The Dead.

This shot was going to be more along the lines of the original Day Of The Dead. The scene when they fly into an empty city and land and then all these Zombies start appearing until there’s load swarming down the street towards them. Sadly because this is only a short story the amount of space I had to set up the story was too small for anything that grand. I was still going to have Zombies roaming around an empty city but I soon realized I needed to play it more shorthand and so out came my copy of Dawn Of The Dead on DVD and I sketched the basic shape of the shopping mall from that for background scenery. I’m not a big fan of sketching from TV or Computer screens but just to still give a slight nod to Day Of The Dead I put that on and tried to get the famous jawless Zombie from the title scene drawn in as well for flavour. How well it works as shorthand I’m not sure. It nice when you have longer to set the scene but I think this shot starts the story out on the right foot more or less. If you know the movies of George Romero hopefully this image will strike a chord.

I was less worried about doing Zombies as unlike giant robots I’ve had a stab at Zombies before. They’re a lot of fun to draw. More undead action soon.

I thought exploding head guy from my last post was the coolest toy I’d ever seen until I saw this Hulk lifting two giant melons toy.

Pop.

It’s my Brothers birthday later in the week and he wanted a Gears Of War figure (not the above one) for a present. But I have to say when I was looking around on the net for the one he’d asked for I was pretty impressed when I come across this figure which I thought was pretty cool. If I had seen a toy like this when I was a kid it would have blown my mind (no pun intended).

Never played Gears Of War before. I’ve got enough money saved up that I could buy an Xbox 360 but I know that if I did I’d never get any work done. Maybe one night a month I’ll try and put aside some time to play some videogames and even finding one night a month to do that is getting hardier and hardier now. I’ve let the gaming side of life slide a bit recently in hopes of freeing up more time. If I had a 360 I’d be on it day and night.
